Composition shingles are the most common roofing material in North America. They are available in two different types of shingles: organic asphalt (composed of recycled paper based products mixed with asphalt) or fibreglass, which are both very comparable in quality. These shingles are easy to install and require little maintenance, which results in their relatively low cost. Although they have a low installation cost, composition shingles will usually only protect your home for about 10 – 25 years. This is the lowest longevity among all roofing materials.
Composition shingles allow you the ability to be creative with your roof because they come in an extensive variety of styles and colours. The roof can really be customized to the design of your home. These shingles also offer exceptional fire resistant properties ensuring the safety of your home. However, the same benefit cannot be said for wind and ice damage. Unfortunately, shingles are easily damaged in cold weather and in high winds yet repairs are easy to undertake and inexpensive.
An average home with composition shingles will need to be re-roofed numerous times over its lifetime; as a result creating waste that will need to be disposed of in the environment making the shingle incredibly environmentally unfriendly.
